What Glasstake does
Glasstake is a menu bar screen recorder for professional video work. It records a display, a window or an area of your screen with ProRes 422, ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 4444 (with alpha), HEVC or H.264, optional HDR, system audio, microphone and a camera overlay (Presenter Overlay), and saves the files on your Mac.
Requirements
macOS 15.2 or later.
Getting started
- Open Glasstake. Its icon appears in the menu bar, and a welcome window walks you through permissions, the output folder and a starting preset.
- Click the menu bar icon and choose what to record (a display, a window or an area).
- Click Start Recording. Click the menu bar icon again and choose Stop Recording when you are done.
You can reopen the welcome window any time in Settings → General → Show Welcome Screen….
Frequently asked questions
How do I allow screen recording?
macOS asks the first time Glasstake needs it. If you denied it, or nothing is captured, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, turn on Glasstake, then quit and reopen Glasstake if macOS asks you to. The welcome window has buttons that open the right page in System Settings. Microphone and Camera are on the same Privacy & Security page.
What do the presets do?
In Settings → Video → Preset (or the Preset row in the menu) choose a destination and Glasstake sets the format for you:
- For Final Cut Pro and For DaVinci Resolve: ProRes 422 HQ in MOV at 60 fps with PCM audio (ProRes 4444 if alpha is on).
- For Premiere Pro: ProRes 422 in MOV at 60 fps with PCM audio (ProRes 4444 if alpha is on).
- For YouTube: HEVC, high quality, MP4, 60 fps, AAC audio.
- For Web & Sharing: H.264, medium quality, MP4, 30 fps, AAC audio.
If you change one of these settings by hand, the preset shows Custom. App names describe a typical workflow only; Glasstake is not affiliated with those companies.
How do I record a window with a transparent background?
Choose Record Window with Transparent Background in the menu and pick a window. Glasstake switches to ProRes 4444 with alpha in a MOV file, turns off the window shadow, records only that window over a transparent background, and restores your previous settings when you stop or cancel. Place the file in your editor's timeline over any background. Not every player shows transparency; QuickTime Player, for example, may show it on black or checkerboard.
HDR recording
Turn on HDR Recording in Settings → Video. It works with HEVC and ProRes; H.264 records SDR only. With HEVC, alpha and HDR can't be used together. HDR only makes a difference when what you record is HDR content shown on an HDR-capable display.
Where are my recordings saved?
By default in Movies/Glasstake in your home folder. To change it, open Settings → General → Output Location and click Change…. Files are named Glasstake_ followed by the date and time.
Countdown and fixed-length recordings
In Settings → General → Timing (or the Timing section in the menu) set a Countdown of 3, 5 or 10 seconds. The countdown appears in the menu bar icon, so it is not recorded, and you can cancel it from the menu. Stop Recording After ends the recording automatically after 30 seconds, or 1, 5, 10 or 30 minutes.
Common problems
- The recording is black or empty: check the Screen Recording permission above, then quit and reopen Glasstake.
- No microphone or camera: turn on Capture Microphone or Presenter Overlay, and check Microphone and Camera in Privacy & Security.
- I can't select ProRes or alpha: ProRes and alpha need the MOV container. MP4 supports H.264 and HEVC only.
- Files are very large: ProRes is meant for editing and makes large files. For sharing, use the YouTube or Web & Sharing preset.
- Something else: write to the contact address above.

Preguntas frecuentes
- For YouTube: HEVC, calidad alta, MP4, 60 fps, audio AAC.
- For Web & Sharing: H.264, calidad media, MP4, 30 fps, audio AAC.
